How to Enroll Your Child in Kindergarten or First Grade
Washington has age requirement laws for entry into public school kindergarten and first grade:
To enroll your child, check with your school district to see what documentation is required. Generally, it’s a good idea to have the documents listed below. If for some reason you do not have these documents, you can still enroll your child in school. Your school or district office will be able to help you.
- It provides your local school district important information about how many young students will be entering in September so they can avoid any last minute scrambles to hire additional teachers.
- Your child will benefit as well, as they won't have to attend potentially overcrowded classrooms and then possibly have to start over with a new classroom and teacher in October.
- You may be asked to fill out a transition form to help the school get to know your child's likes, dislikes and skill levels. Click here to learn what documents you may need to bring.
